About Us

Brilliant Ballybunion is working with Community Collaborators to grow food, protect habitats and create a vision for the future, in the context of taking climate action and protecting biodiversity.

This project has multiple elements in terms of creating long term transformative change in 4 stages: Information; Exploration; Inspiration and Expression.

Brilliant Ballybunion is one of 19 large scale IGNITE projects funded under the Creative Climate Action Fund through Creative Ireland.

Being Creative

The project works with embedded artist Lisa Fingleton through a series of Drawing with Nature interventions in Ballybunion and at The Barna Way. The community collaborators have the opportunity to explore issues relating to climate change and biodiversity loss through journalling, film and various forms of creative expression. Lisa co-creates projects with the community.

Growing Food

Fridays on the Farm provide an opportunity for the community collaborators to grow, share and preserve food with Rena Blake at The Barna Way. Brilliant Ballybunion will explore alternative spaces for growing, including creating edible landscapes around Ballybunion.

Protecting Nature

The project works with Dr Joanne O’Brien to deliver a Wild About Life programme. She creates experiences that connect the community collaborators to the creatures living under the sea and around the town through bio-recording, biodiversity mapping, nature walks and land monitoring. Ballybunion is at the mouth of the Shannon estuary which is a SAC, home to a large colony of bottlenose dolphins. It is one of only 10 protected sites in Europe.
